{"id":681,"date":"2022-11-14T11:00:53","date_gmt":"2022-11-14T11:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/remakingthehumanbody.sbm.qmul.ac.uk\/?p=681"},"modified":"2022-11-14T11:32:30","modified_gmt":"2022-11-14T11:32:30","slug":"new-publication-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/remakingthehumanbody.sbm.qmul.ac.uk\/?p=681","title":{"rendered":"New publication!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A new publication is out entitled <em>Patient informed choice in the age of evidence-based medicine: IVF patients\u2019 approaches to biomedical evidence and fertility treatment add-ons. <\/em>It is open access and <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/1467-9566.13581\">available online<\/a> in the journal Sociology of Health &amp; Illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the article, we challenge the view of IVF patients as willing to uncritically accept or request unproven, expensive treatment as a desperate act to increase their chances of having a baby. Rather, patients are required to make complex treatment choices in a highly commercialised market and an uncertain context of reproductive medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key findings presented in the article are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Patients are expected to make <em>informed<\/em> choices about what additional tests and treatments (add-ons) to include in IVF<\/li><li>Interviews with patients show how they negotiate the notion of medical evidence in relation to their own experience of going through IVF<\/li><li>Approximately half of the patients that we interviewed preferred to delegate the evaluation of evidence to their doctor (or other medical professional)<\/li><li>Yet across the whole participant group, we identified four different patient approaches to evidence in IVF<\/li><li>The patients interviewed described how they would:<ol><li>delegate evaluations of evidence to experts;<\/li><li>critically assess available evidence;<\/li><li>acknowledge the process of making evidence;<\/li><li>contextualise evidence in their lived experience of infertility.<\/li><\/ol><\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new publication is out entitled Patient informed choice in the age of evidence-based medicine: IVF patients\u2019 approaches to biomedical evidence and fertility treatment add-ons.
